Siena is known in Italy and all around the world for the historical Palio, a famous horse race, but Siena, one of the most beautiful city in Tuscany, is also known for its artistic, historical and cultural heritage. Siena isn’t a large city and is possible visit its historical centre just in week end, if you want! Of course you can’t have an accurate tour, in each church or museum but will be worth it. You can start the visit from Piazza del Campo, an important part of the city and where the Palio take place. Furthermore this square is really beautiful with its articular shape that remember a shell and with its terracotta tiles floor . on the centre we can find a copy of the biggest fountain of the city: Fonte Gaia. The fountain is made in “marmot di Carrara” with decorations by Jacopo della Quercia. The original fountain is situated in the Complesso Museale of Santa Maria della Scala in Siena. In Piazza del Campo you can also visit the Palazzo Comunale with its important piece like “Il Buono e Cattivo Governo” by Ambrogio Lorenzetti and the spectacular “Maesà” by Simone Martini. Near Palazzo Comunale you can find the Mangia Tower that is high 87 meters. You can arrive on the top by a narrow steep stairway and admire the city, surely a charming view.
Another unmissable destination in our tour is the Dome of the city, a beautiful Romanesc- Gothic style church made in white and green marble. In the inner you can visit the baptistery with its “Fonte Battesimale” by Dnatello, Jacopo della Quercia and Lorenzo Ghiberti. Furthermore you can find the amazing Piccolomini library fresco by Pinturicchio and Raffaello and with its particular floor where 40 artists paint 56 pictures. In the Duomo you can also admire other masterpiece of Donatello, Pinturichio and Michelangelo.
