If you are looking for a holiday with your family, San Gimignano in Tuscany, is the city for you. Children and adults will be seduced by this particular village, UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990.
In the 3rd century b.C. San Gimignano born as an Etruscan village and became an essential part of Italian history. Chroniclers Lupi, Coppi and Pecori relate that during Catiline conspiracy against the Roman Republic in the 1st century, two patrician brothers, Muzio and Silvio, left Rome and moved to Valdelsa. There they built two castles, called Mucchio and Silvia. A legend tells that Saint Gimignano, saved the two castles by the Totila barbarous so later the village took the name of the saint.
During the Middle Age the city grew up high, the famous tower house was a symbol of power so, each noble family wanted to own one. Other Tuscan cities had tower houses, such as Siena or Florence but San Gimignano has now the best preserved. Effectively by time a lot of towers were destroyed but many of these are still well preserved.
Beyond Towers, San Gimignano has got a lot of historical places to visit, a marvellous panorama, museums and the famous “Vernaccia” a traditional wine produced from the ancient variety of Vernaccia grape which is grown on the sandstone hillsides of the area.
